The origin of the name change of Anders Gustaf Bly to Andrew Lee Leavene remains a mystery. He exited Sweden in 1870 as Anders Gustav Levin to come to the United States. Swedish church records from 1865-1870 show him as an apprentice to the baker, Sven Gothlander. In 1877, he returned to Sweden to accompany his sister, Maria Bly, to Moberly, Missouri.
